Artist Statement 2022
I am a multi media artist who makes photographs, paintings, drawings, and conceptual sculptures. The photographs I currently create are mostly Digital, although I do enjoy photographing with 120mm film using the Holga and Diana cameras. All of my photographs are digitally printed. I prefer making straight photographs, getting what I want in camera, therefore utilizing photoshop as little as possible. I typically focus on making color photographs but do like working with black and white photography at times.
Self Portraiture and Still Life photography are where I communicate my socio-political ideas about Identity, Beauty, Race, and Gender.
My Street and Nature photographs are more intuitive and instantaneous, as opposed to the extremely composed and deliberate Self Portrait and Still Life images I make.
All my photographs are either printed very small like miniatures or like traditional size photographs.
My oil paintings and multi medium drawings feature composited images of plants, animals and text which are influenced and inspired by gardening, wildlife and poetry.
The conceptual sculptures I make are typically made from found objects which consist of every day things like commercial vegetable crates, cardboard boxes, and glass jars. My sculptures often reference big industry farming and the commercial production of food. As well as farming, I also often reference the education of children using children’s learning tools, objects and toys.
All of my work explores Identity and Materialism.
I started taking self portraits in 2008 in Graduate School. At that time I had just turned 30 and was reflecting upon my life in all ways. I began an exploration of my Identity utilizing self portraiture as a way to communicate my thoughts and feelings.
Quickly my self portraits evolved into larger expressions of Identity that went beyond myself. I explore notions of ethnicity, gender, culture, and social constructions of race connected to my personal experiences.
My Self Portraits ask questions; they don’t give answers. As a Feminist artist, I continue to explore my Identity with all my art, and I’m still asking questions.
